Adult content on TV: I&B ministry mulling parental lock system

New Delhi, Sep 14: In a bid to strengthen its ‘content code’, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is mulling introducing a parental lock system and fixing ‘watershed hours’ for showing adult content on television through discussions with broadcasters. Top sources in the ministry today said the proposal for introducing a parental lock system and watershed hours came up during Minister Ambika Soni’s recent meetings with representatives of Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) and News Broadcasters Association (NBA), as she is keen that these norms, followed globally, should be implemented in India also. Though consultations are still on between the ministry and broadcasters on fine tuning the content code, it will take some time for both parties to arrive at a consensus on its various aspects, sources said.

“With a majority of Indian families still being single television set ones having elderly members, the minister is of the view that such provisions would help make television viewing a pleasant experience for them,” a senior ministry official said. The ministry is said to have suggested broadcasters that under the system, parents would be able to lock certain channels, which they think should not be viewed by children belonging to a certain age group. The sources also said that the minister has suggested broadcasters to introduce watershed hours for adult programmes, where adult content could be shown between 11 pm and 4 am on television. Since assuming office in June, Soni initiated the process of having consultations with IBF and NBA representatives with the aim of making the ‘content code’ more acceptable to broadcasters. Though the code has been in place for quite some time, both IBF and NBA, the two major bodies of television news and entertainment channels, have been following their own set of self regulatory norms. The logic being, that the content code guidelines were not acceptable to them as they contended that these were too interfering.

While NBA had drafted its code soon after the 26/11 attacks, IBF had its own set of rules in place a couple years ago when it had even suggested ‘A’ and ‘UA’ ratings for television programmes on the line of feature films. The government while welcoming the guidelines engaged them in discussions, held almost on a bi-weekly basis, with the aim of inculcating some their rules into its own code. Ministry officials said though broadcasters have their own set of guidelines, whenever there is a violation of norms by television channels, government sends advisories to channels as per the guidelines of the content code, which have to be adhered by broadcasters. In such a light, the aim of consultations between Soni and broadcasters is to arrive at a consensus on a mutually acceptable content code (of the government) and also on creating a synergy between the interests of both viewers and broadcasters, ministry sources said. Film to propagate cause of Majuli

Staff reporter
GUWAHATI, Aug 30 – The cause of Majuli, arguably the largest river island of the world is all set to attract national attention, this time in celluloid though.

With the much-talked about movie As the River Flows, made with the backdrop of the day-to-day suffering of the island’s inhabitants, nearing completion, National Award winning Assamese filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky too is enthusiastic about the film.

The movie made under the banner of the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) is bilingual (Assamese and Hindi) and stars veteran actor Victor Banerjee, Sanjay Suri and Raj Zutshi, amongst others. The music has been scored by Zubeen Garg.

“As the film is made with the backdrop of Majuli, we believe, many of the island’s causes would get exposure at the national-level,” Bidyut Kotoky talking to The Assam Tribune over phone from New Delhi stated. The Assamese version of the movie would be titled Ekhon Nedheka Nodir Sipare.

“The movie may not be just about Majuli but would certainly give a picture of the existing scenario there,” he pointed out. The movie is a socio-political thriller which revolves around the central character Abhijit Sandhilya.

He informed that the movie is expected to be ready by October last and the timing of the all-India release would be decided then.

“We have composed a special poem for the movie, which we are using for the movie’s promotion,” Kotoky, who has also written the script stated. ASSAM TRIBUNE

‘I want to compose music for Bollywood films’

New Delhi, Aug 30: He has been the face of sarod across the globe for years, created new ragas and collaborated with international orchestras, but now music legend Ustad Amjad Ali Khan says he would love to create tunes for Bollywood movies as well.

“I would love to compose music for a Bollywood film. There haven’t been any talks as of now, but that’s something I am open to and willing to do,” Khan told. He however denies reports that acting in films is on his wish list. “I read articles saying that I wanted to act in a film. That is completely untrue, all I had said was that I am open if someone wants me to be in a documentary where I am not required to be anyone else. But I don’t want to act in a full-on film. I was clear,” he said. The legendary musician is still smitten with the melody of old Hindi movie songs and believes film music these days focuses on fast-paced dance numbers. “The songs of the 1960s and 70s appeal even today because of the melody they had. With due respect to all the talented music directors, the songs today lack melody and the emphasis is more on fast tempo and dance numbers because of the change in values. That’s why I feel old music is still a favourite among many,” Khan said.

Khan, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, was only six when he gave his first sarod recital. There are not many countries he hasn’t travelled to with his sarod. The maestro is happy that youngsters are still interested in pursuing a career in classical music, but stressed that there were no “shortcuts” in the field. “There are a lot of young talented classical musicians today, so I can say that the future of Indian classical music is very bright. But one has to realise that there are no short cuts in this form of music. One has to struggle a lot to gain knowledge,” Khan said. “Classical music is like entering a dark tunnel with the hope of sun rays some day. It is a long journey which needs patience, peace and serenity,” he added.

Married to Subhalakshmi, a Bharatnatyam danseuse, Khan has two sons, Ayaan and Amaan, who are carrying their father’s legacy to the next generation of classical musicians. “They are very hardworking. Both have different styles of playing the sarod. I am glad they receive appreciation, love and blessings from people all over the world. They are on the right track and I am happy that they are so dedicated,” he said of his sons. The maestro recently collaborated with Grammy nominee and Iraqi Oud player Rahim Alhaj for an album called “Ancient Sounds”, which released in the US in June and is set for an Indian release in two months.

The collaboration brings together the musical heritage of their respective ancient cultures in a contemporary way. “All tracks are written and composed by me, except the fifth one. The album, which also has influences of percussion, is sublime, powerful and passionate,” said the 63-year-old. The veteran was part of the Indian Independence Day celebrations in Sydney and Perth and paid a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi through his music. “I started the evening with two of Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite songs ‘Vaishnav janato’ and ‘Ram Dhun’ followed by traditional ragas. Sarod is not very popular in Australia unlike Europe and the US; so I want to do more shows there,” he said. “I agree that sarod needs some impetus and popularity among people. I’m trying that it becomes as popular as the guitar and violin. We are doing more and more shows so that people come to know about this stringed instrument because I know one thing for sure, if anyone listens to sarod once, then he gets completely attracted to it,” Khan said. I would love to work with SRK again: Parzaan Dastur

New Delhi, Aug 30: He popularised the line “Tussi na jao” (Please don’t go) as the cute Sikh kid in Karan Johar’s 1998 hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hain. Parzaan Dastur, now 17, plays the protagonist in new film Sikandar and says he would love to take up acting as a career and work with Shah Rukh Khan again.

“Acting is something I have been doing for long. I have loved doing it and enjoyed every moment of it. But that time (during Kuch Kuch Hota Hain) it was a hobby. If it turns out to be a career, I will love it because I just enjoy being in front of the camera. I enjoy taking commands from the director, performing and getting the appreciation,” Parzaan told. Parzaan wants to act with Shah Rukh and Kajol again. They played the lead in Kuch Kuch.... “I would love to work with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol again. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was an experience of a lifetime and I would love to have that again,” said the teenager who is currently studying management in a Mumbai college.

“Apart from that I want to work with a legend like Amitabh Bachchan. Any young aspiring actor would love to work with him simply because you get to learn so many things off the sets from him,” he added. As a child actor, Parzaan has also featured in other films like Mohabbatein, Zubeidaa and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. He was also seen in the award-winning film Parzania (2007), which was about a boy who goes missing during the 2002 Gujarat riots. His latest Sikandar, which released last week, revolves around a boy in the troubled Kashmir Valley who wants to make it big in football, but his life changes when he finds a gun lying on the road. The film, shot entirely in Kashmir and directed by Piyush Jha, also stars Ayesha Kapoor, Sanjay Suri and R Madhavan.

Parzaan believes that Sikandar helped him mature as an actor. “With Sikandar I became more mature. I understood what acting is all about. What does it mean to get into the character and how can one adopt a role. This film took me way ahead as far as acting is concerned,” said the youngster who has also worked in many commercial advertisements. He has found a good friend in Ayesha who has won awards for her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black (2005).

“We had 30-35 days in Kashmir, working together. It’s been great working with Ayesha. She is a brilliant actress and apart from that she has worked very hard on the film. She can’t speak Hindi, but she had to speak the language for the movie so the amount of hard work she has put in to portray the character, to say her lines properly with the correct emotions, is just great. She has become a really good friend,” said Parzaan. (IANS)

Rajshree Theatre to stage play on Battle of Saraighat

GUWAHATI, Aug 29: Mobile theatres in Asom have been entertaining the masses since ages and are growing in stature. At a time when mobile theatres are adapting Bollywood and Hollywood films and weaving song, dance and romance into their plays, Rajshree Theatre has come up with a play based on Asom’s glorious past.

Rajshree Theatre will stage the play Saraighat at the Beltola HS playground for two days, starting tomorrow. The play, written by famous dramatist Jiten Sarma, is based on the famous Battle of Saraighat of 1671 which was fought between the Mughal empire and the Ahom Kingdom. The strong fight put up by the Ahoms and the valour displayed by Lachit Borphukan against the Mughal forces are the main ingredients of the play.

At a press conference today, Jiten Sarma said,“Mobile theatres have rarely staged plays based on Asom’s history. In a bid to attract the audience, plays are usually based on romantic themes. We have chosen a rather ‘unconventional’ theme for the our play but we still hope to attract people.”

Sarma lamented the fact the Asom’s history does not find any place in school and college textbooks today. “The young generation of Asom is unaware of Asom’s glorious past. They are unaware of the exploits of our heroes like Lachit Borphukan. Saraighat is our attempt to give the young generation some knowledge about Asom’s history.” said Sarma.

Saraighat’s art director Nuruddin Ahmed said that it was a challenging task for him to recreate the Battle of Saraighat on stage. “Martial arts experts from Manipur had specially come to train the artistes. The stage and the settings will be something to watch out for. A lot of effort has gone into incorporating even the minutest details of those times will making the stage,” said Ahmed
Saraighat, made with a whooping budget of Rs 20 lakh, has Pradip Nisith and Champak Sarma essaying key roles. THE SENTINEL

I do not advise Shruti: Kamal Hassan

New Delhi, Aug 28: National award-winning actor-turned director Kamal Hassan says he does not advise his daughter Shruti Hassan on her acting career, as he himself never liked to be advised. “I have never given any tips or advice to Shruti, as I would not like to be advised at her age. She has taken her own course, she could have very well taken up music instead of acting. If she asks for advice, then probably I could give her some reference points,” says the Tamil superstar. Shruti made her debut in Bollywood this year with Luck, which did not do well at the box office and now the multi-talented actress is composing the music for her father’s next film Unnaipol Ooruvan, a Tamil adaptation of Niraj Pandey’s A Wednesday. She has also roped in her younger sister Akshara to choreograph a video for the same.

“Shruti is trained in classical music, although she is more into Rock and Jazz. Akshara has just started off, and she has a long way to go,” says the doting father. Although Unnaipol Ooruvan is a remake of A Wednesday, Hassan insists that his version of the film is different. “My Wednesday is a different Wednesday, it could be a Thursday or a Friday. India is a democracy and the politics here changes from state to state, so my film is also made with a different rhetoric,” says the actor, who was in the capital to attend a screening of his film Hey Ram marking his 50th year in Indian cinema. Salman yet to decide on buying an IPL team: Sohail

JALANDHAR, Aug 28: Close on the heels of reports about Salman Khan buying an IPL team, his brother Sohail Khan on Friday revealed that promoters of the Twenty20 league were in touch with the actor, but he is yet to make up his mind on owning a side.

“The promoters of Indian Premier League were in touch with Salman since its inception but nothing concrete has come out so far,” Sohail, who was in the city to promote his new movie Kisan, told reporters. “Even there is no IPL team available which Salman can own,” he added. When pointed out that there was a plan to increase the number of teams from nine to 11 in 2011 IPL, Sohail said, “Lets see what happens.” Sohail, however, ruled the possibility of Salman’s rivalry with co-actor and Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan deepening because of his brother's intention of buying an IPL team.

Asked whether he is party to his elder brother's intention of associating with the IPL, Sohail said, “Personally I feel, celebrities should also promote other games like our national game hockey.”
“If I get a chance to promote sports, I would promote football and swimming, because I am attached with these games from childhood,” he said. (PTI)

Zubin wins hearts in Arunachal’s Tirap

ITANAGAR, Aug 14: Singing sensation from Asom Zubin Garg has expressed his willingness to become an ambassador for planting trees at Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh to check the harmful effects of Global Warming.

The singer, of Gangster fame, had discussions with the district administration on how they could evolve a strategy for planting at least 50,000 trees in one year and even offered his services to perform free of cost with his entire troupe on such occasions to motivate people towards this noble cause.

Zubin, who performed on the occasion of the first Tirap half marathon at Khonsa on Wednesday, not only enthralled the audience with his mesmerizing voice, but also won everyone’s hearts in this remote town with his humility and ability to connect with the audience.

He professed his love for the State on the stage by mentioning that Arunachal and Switzerland are the two most beautiful places on earth. He then surprised everyone by naming almost all major tribes of Arunachal Pradesh and how he would like to bring out an album of Nocte and Wancho songs. He held an 8,000-strong audience spell-bound with his three-hour performance.
Residents of Khonsa later said the event was unlike anything that had been witnessed here ever and would be remembered for a long time to come. The audience matched the singer in enthusiasm and their response could be heard over a radius of several kilometres.

Zubin interacted with everyone in the audience and went to the periphery of the stage several times to shake hands with young boys and girls. He even brushed aside his security guards to be a part of the audience for whom he was performing.

However, what surprised everyone and made a place for him in every heart of Tirap was his sudden decision to stay back in the district for an additional day as he was impressed by the flora of the district and wanted to carry some rare fern species saplings back home to Guwahati and Mumbai for planting in his personal garden.

This was despite the fact that he was scheduled to travel to Trinidad and Tobago (through New York) for a performance on August 15. Instead, cancelling the program in the US, he decided to drive down to Longding subdivision of Tirap anonymously to experience the natural beauty of the area. (UNI)
